| THE HISTORY OF BOUNCE BOUNCE was created back around 1993 or 1994, it's a bit blurry as to exactly when. In high school a friend and I had come across an article in WIZARD about the comic book BONE all about how it had developed a strong female readership. We decided to come up with a cute character of our own and see if we could get the girls in school to decide on whose was the cutest. It was a little personal contest between the two of us with no real prize or anything to brag about, except that all the girls would like whatever we came up with. My creation was, of course, Bounce. A small ball of fur wearing Nikes (one friend was adamant I put him in old school Pumas) and usually sitting down with a bottle next to him. My friend came up with a stoner koala with a long tail. Needless to say it wasn't hard to figure out which of our two creations the girls liked most. Before I graduated in 1995, Bounce was in yearbooks, on walls...the guy spread like a virus. In fact I had even started a little comic book in a lined notebook about him waking up in New York after a hard night's party in California. Not sure whatever happened to it, because I placed it on top of my refrigerator one day, and it was gone the next. Probably thrown away by my late-grandfather for all I know. I had about 70 pages done...all that work gone forever. I continued to draw him sporadically over the next 7 years after, always with some measure of intending to tell the little guys’ story one way or the other. BOUNCE IN PRINT Fast forward to August of 2002 and Bounce had finally made it into print. Tara Plybon, owner and editor of the now-defunct TAYLOR TRIBUNE needed a comic strip for her little free, weekly paper, and I was the go-to guy for the job. Bounce made it through 7 issues before being cancelled on my part because of stress at home and the horrible onset of artist/writers block. After that, Bounce returned to the realm of the occasional sketch, but he has never been too far from my heart and my desire to do something with him. THE FUTURE OF BOUNCE Now as 2008 begins, Bounce is in for something big this year. Despite a slew of other projects that I have on my plate, I have decided to start amassing a collection of brand-new, back-to-the-old-days strips of the little guy. This time they will reflect Bounce as he was originally designed to be, rude, foul-mouthed and a party animal. Stay tuned because this is the year that the ball of fur rages onward. |
